“Deep flavour you would expect from an authentic butternut Indian condiment. A very special chutney, warming and flavoursome with character from cumin and spices! Thick consistency, to be enjoyed with crackers or poppadums!”
– Rob, Heartisan Fine Foods customer
The world of chutney is filled with various weird and wonderful flavours and, while traditional chutneys such as Caramelised Red Onion are still firm favourites, it’s great to see people branching out and trying some more creative flavours alongside their cheese and crackers.
With an extensive selection of chutneys on offer, it’s no surprise that our ever-growing repertoire contains several unique flavours. Just some of our favourites include Apple & Fig by Friar’s Farm, Newton & Pott’s Mango Salsa and Springfield Kitchen’s Keralan Inspired Plantain & Coconut (which has a great story behind it).
But today we’re focusing on a delight founded and curated by Green Kitchen Preserves – the Spicy Butternut Squash and Apple Chutney.
Finding it’s fame over the last few decades, butternut squash has drastically gained in popularity, often used in soups, curries, risottos, salads and even as a substitute for chips. Both low in fat and high in fibre, butternut squash is a starchy yet healthy vegetable, offering high levels of potassium, Vitamin A and Vitamin C (we love a health benefit!).
So, how did it end up as the main ingredient in this delectable chutney?
Offering tones similar to that of pumpkin, butternut squash pairs well with spices such as ginger, cumin, cinnamon, cayenne and chilli to offer a delicate Asian-inspired taste. The vegetable is often partnered with apple to bring sweeter notes and in this case, combat the spices, to result in a warming and autumnal chutney.
Both gluten free and suitable for vegetarians, this chutney can be used in a variety of recipes. While it’s difficult to beat serving it with a traditional cheeseboard or as dressing on a salad, it also pairs well with Indian cuisine and rice dishes as well as works nicely as a dip for your favourite tortilla chips or poppadums.
